SongNook Privacy Policy
Effective August 26, 2026
SongNook is a songwriting app built around a simple promise: your music stays yours, on your device.
What SongNook stores
Everything you create in SongNook — recordings, song ideas, lyrics, chords, notes, practice markers, and settings — is stored locally on your device. SongNook has no accounts, no sign-in, and no library sync. We cannot see, access, or recover your work, because it never reaches us — unless you deliberately send something with SongNook Send, described below.
Backups and exports
When you back up, export, or share from SongNook through your device's share sheet, the resulting files go only where you send them — for example the Files app, iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or another app you choose. Those destinations are governed by their own privacy policies. SongNook never uploads anything automatically.
Sharing with SongNook Send
SongNook Send is the app's built-in way to hand clips or a whole sketch to someone else with a link. It is entirely optional, and nothing is uploaded until you tap Get a link.
What uploads. Only the clips or SongNook packages you selected, with their file names, plus an optional title, your name, and a short message if you choose to add them. Nothing else from your library is sent.
Where it goes. Files are uploaded to a server we operate (send.songnook.app), hosted on Cloudflare. We store the bytes as you sent them; we do not open, listen to, analyze, or use your files for anything except delivering them to the people you give the link to.
Who can access it. Anyone who has the link can download the files. Links are long, random, and unguessable — they are not listed, searchable, or indexed anywhere, and there is no way to browse other people's transfers. Treat a link like the files themselves: share it only with people you want to have them.
How long it stays. Every transfer is deleted 7 days after it is created — files and details both. Uploads you start but never finish are cleaned up within about a day. Expiry is automatic; you don't need to do anything. If you need something taken down sooner, email us and we will delete it.
No account, no identity. Transfers are not tied to an account, because there are none. We keep a count of how many times each file was downloaded, but nothing about who downloaded it.
Abuse prevention. When you upload, your device's IP address is used briefly to enforce rate limits (so the service can't be abused as a free file host). These counters expire on their own within a couple of hours; we do not keep a log of who uploaded what.
What SongNook sends over the internet
Beyond Send, SongNook makes a small number of anonymous network requests to provide specific features:
- English word lookups (rhymes, synonyms, related words) are sent to the Datamuse API. Only the word you look up is transmitted.
- Hebrew word lookups are sent to a server we operate, which passes the search word to Anthropic's Claude API to generate suggestions, and to Dicta (a non-profit Hebrew language institute) for rhymes and vocalization. Only the search word is sent — never your lyrics, recordings, or any identifier.
- Public-domain book text is fetched from Project Gutenberg / Gutendex when you use the Magpie lyric tool.
These requests contain no account information and nothing from your library beyond the word you typed. If you never use these features or Send, SongNook makes no network requests at all.
What SongNook collects
Nothing. SongNook contains no analytics, no advertising SDKs, and no trackers. We do not collect usage data, personal information, or telemetry of any kind.
If the app crashes, a diagnostic log is written locally on your device only. It is never transmitted automatically — you can choose to share it with us from Settings → About when reporting a problem, and you can see exactly what it contains before sending it.
Permissions
- Microphone — required to record your song ideas. Audio is captured only when you start a recording and is stored only on your device.
- Notifications (Android) — used to show the recording notification that lets recording continue in the background.
Children's privacy
SongNook does not collect personal information from anyone, including children. Files sent through SongNook Send are held only as described above and are deleted automatically.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new effective date.
